Have you ever had scrambled eggs and blue cheese? Have you!? You should try it.
I’ll tell you all about it. The story of how I discovered the wonderful combination of eggs and blue cheese.
It all started at a relatively popular bed and breakfast in Swakopmund. I had spent many holidays at that particular B&B and I was aware of how they served breakfast buffet style. Many people don’t like buffets becuase mass producing food usually leads to a decrease in quality but I believe buffets have a place and time and that place and time is at a B&B for Breakfast. Jugs full of different types of yogurts and a jug of milk. Different cereals and muesli and a big bowl of fresh seasonal fruit and the usual selection of orange, guava, and tropical juice plus coffee, milk, and a small selction of teas all stood on one end of the bar. I suppose that would be good enough for an everyday breakfast but it’s holiday time; time for a little more indulgence. So that kind food would just be considered the starters. The main event was on the opposite side of the bar. Scrambled eggs in those big buffet serving dish things, bacon in another, sausages in another, a variety of breads that you could choose to toast or not, and an assortment of cold meats and cheeses. That was where the party was at.
For a long time I never really paid attention to the cold meats and cheeses section of the buffet because I did not quite understand it. To me it was a station where people would make salami and cheese sandwiches. And who would ever make a salami and cheese sandwich, on holiday, at a B&B that serves perfectly good bacon and eggs? That’s crazy! But as I grew older, and in the recent past, I began to explore the cheese world a little more and I discovered that Camembert cheese is delectably smooth, mild in flavour and tasty and blue cheese is not nearly as smelly and strong flavoured and terrible tasting as so many of my family members and friends told me. Okay fine, blue cheese is a little pungent and strongly flavoured but it is also extremely delicious. So this time when I looked at the cold meats and cheeses I didn’t see it as a type of food out of place at a breakfast buffet. I saw it as an opportunity to eat some tasty fancy cheese. And I thought, “Why not? Blue cheese is tasty, I am hungry. And I have a plate of beautifully perfectly scrambled eggs. What could go wrong?” Nothing. Absolutely nothing could go wrong. Scrambled eggs and blue cheese is a match made in food heaven.
Blue Cheese Scrambled Eggs
- 8 extra large preferably free range organic eggs
- a knob of butter
- 100g blue cheese of your choice
- salt and pepper to taste
- Crack the eggs in a large bowl and whisk thoroughly.
- Place the butter in a skillet pan and place on the stove on a low heat.
- Before the butter has melted place the eggs into the pan and stir gently and slowly.
- Continue to cook the eggs stirring continuously over a medium low heat until it has reached your preferred consistency. I like my eggs just a tiny little bit undercooked and moist.
- Just before the eggs are finished crumbled the cheese into the pan and add salt and pepper to taste.
- Gently incorporate the cheese into the eggs.
- Once the eggs are cooked to your preferred doneness transfer onto a plate so as not to further cook them and dry them out out.
- Serve with buttered toast and bacon if you please.
